Esther is the intersection where all these loves meet and she has to make a decision, which will determine both theirs and her own faith.

Esther is trying to avoid making this choice, she is afraid of its fatal finality but the three who are in love pursue her. They catch up with her on a July evening in 2006 on the premiere of the opera ‘Dialogues of the Carmelites’ in Teatro Real in Madrid. The legendary opera diva R.K. makes her debut as Madame de Croissy, the prioress of the Carmelite monastery. In the final moments of her life she, too, must make a fateful choice – to die in deadly sin, or to give spiritual salvation to the youngest novice in the monastery. Quiet witness of this climactic evening is the imperishable spirit of Gertrud von Le Fort, whose novella ‘The Last One at the Scaffold’ is the basis for the libretto in the opera.

Gertrud observes the characters both in the hall and on the stage, she empathizes with them and then tells the reader this original and inspired story, created with the intoxication of words that border between reality and magic.
