I browsed the available Kindle books but wasnt satisfied with what I found. So I did the research and wrote my own. Heres my consumers guide for what to avoid in bitcoin books:1. Too dumbed down. I dont know about you, but I need a little more detail about how a new currency works than this: “Bitcoins are created by solving a difficult math problem.” Thats fine for a newspaper column, I suppose, but not a book. Created by whom? Why? What math problem? Just some unrelated random computation or something useful?2.

Too technical. Full of formulas and fragments of computer code in a language that I dont know.3. A get rich quick book. Lots of obsolete information about mining bitcoin.4. A political manifesto.5. Too much padding. Its useful to know a little about the history of previous attempts at digital currency but theres no need for a history of money back to the Pharaohs.6.

Missing the big picture. I certainly want to know about the technology but I also want to know about the ecosystem, the regulatory outlook, the people involved, investment options, etc. And I want this information assembled with some editorial judgment and in the proper context- otherwise I could just hop around from article to article in Wikipedia.7.

Outdated. Anything written more than a few months ago is missing some key developments in this fast-moving field. Ive revised my book to keep up with the latest developments. Please allow me to be your guide to the fascinating world of bitcoin. I hope that you find this book useful. If you read it, please write a review to help others and to help me improve the book.- CarlBonus!

Check out the Sources page for a brief review of an often-overlooked book written more than ten years ago. Its an entertaining and informative look at the development of public-key crypto and digital signatures, two key technologies employed by bitcoin. But it also puts todays debate about the NSA and privacy into perspective - a debate that played out once before in the eighties and nineties.

It also gives you some insight into the mindset of the cypherpunks of an earlier generation that can be useful when trying to understand people like Assange and Snowden.
