I almost know Oge, her forgetfulness, her loneliness, her memories, her not fitting in. The author makes me know her and she’d be a good friend, and I’d sympathize. Then the short story ends with a truth, sweet Oge “falling headlong into a tunnel” while the reader holds back. This is short story writing as it’s meant to be, with threads of memory and friendship beautifully woven through the darkness of betrayal and alienation.Families, war, mistaken choices, memories broken in the secret of not sharing, torn by age or pain… “Memories were like pots,” says another character, the dirty ones taken out, “put… under the tap, and scrubbed…” and friendship is more than shared coffee and conversation. The stories travel from Africa to Belgium, through shades of love and loss, and carry the reader with them.

Chika Unigwe’s lyrical, unflinching writing draws me and sits me down to listen—her Short Stories is highly recommended.Disclosure: I was lucky enough to get this when it was free.
